The Blend Behind the Championship Turf

The grass seed mixture used for overseeding the pitches contains varieties selected for specific performance traits:

  • Fabian – Perennial ryegrass, 4turf® (tetraploid turf type)
  • Julius, Borsala and Yvette – Three turf-type Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) varieties

Unlike in England, where perennial ryegrass is often preferred, Swiss turf managers favour Kentucky bluegrass for its dense, durable, hard-wearing, and long-lasting playing surface.

Fabian – Strength and Speed Combined

Fabian is DLF’s top-performing 4turf® variety, ranked in the top on both the UK and Dutch sports turf lists. It combines fast establishment with strong disease resistance and an impressive tolerance to stress, thanks to its larger seed size, improved root system, and high resilience.

Julius, Borsala and Yvette – The Durable Choice

Kentucky bluegrass plays a major role in the mixture due to its dense growth, excellent wear tolerance, and strong ability to regenerate through underground rhizomes. Since establishment takes time, all varieties in the mixture are coated with a product that supports faster germination – a critical factor when overseeding pitches under tight deadlines and high-quality standards.

These specific varieties have been carefully selected for their fine leaf texture, high disease resistance, and ability to maintain a green, uniform surface throughout an intense tournament – even under heavy wear and frequent matches, as seen during a European Championship.

The Seed Growers Behind the Championship

The success of DLF’s sports turf varieties is built on a strong partnership with Danish seed growers. These varieties are grown, harvested, and cleaned in Denmark – where the expertise and experience needed to deliver world-class seed are found. When millions of viewers watch perfectly manicured pitches in Switzerland this summer, they’re seeing the result of the skilled and meticulous work of Danish seed producers.

DLF’s variety portfolio, combined with the dedication of Danish seed growers, forms the foundation that places Danish seed production at the very top of the global elite.
